The L Family | Photographer Kansas City

November 8, 2013 · 1:33 pm · - family

I love watching a family grow up. Their daughter is now a 4 year old preschooler full of sass. I find it amusing how much personality she has developed. Just thinking the next time I take their holiday pictures little miss will be in Kindergarten!

I am so glad I get to photograph families growing up. You don’t realize how fast time flies until you look at your own family. It’s easy to forget the little details and I love documenting it.

I got to cuddle with this little guy a few weeks ago. He was such a sweetheart and really easy going. He loved to be cuddled and who doesn’t want to cuddle such an adorable baby? His mom had tons of adorable hats for me to choose from. She may have gone a little overboard on Etsy but that’s ok. :)

My Wall Display | Overland Park Family Photographer

November 2, 2013 · 5:04 pm · personal, products

I have a confession to make. Sure we always have family photos taken every year. Yes I take hundreds of images of my own kiddos every month as well as professional portraits for other families. My confession? I’m not very good about printing photos of my own family. I print them sporadically when I think about it and am in front of the computer to do it. What I’m even worse about is taking my family photos and actually hanging them up. Well this year for my birthday I got what every photographer wants – a wall display. After our annual family portraits, I sat down, used my program I offer my clients and designed a wall display. This display has a 24×30 and 4 11×14 images. I am seriously in love with these images!! Aren’t my kiddos just adorable?

I have been taking family pictures for this family for several years. I met little Sophie when she was just a baby and now she’ll be five this December and is a big sister to little Caroline. As a family portrait photographer I love to watch families grow. Aren’t these little girls simply adorable?!

    Gorgeous wedding!

Wedding: Carly & John

September 9, 2013 · 2:00 pm · - weddings

This wedding was on a perfect day in June. The wedding and reception was at 28 Event Space. I loved all of the details that Carly planned. She thought of everything from the perfect present for her groom, the candy buffet, the bridesmaids presents. We had a chance to grab some portraits with the wedding party at the Plaza. Then we headed to the Nelson Atkins museum right before the rain started to pour down. Rain on wedding day is good luck right? Well this couple has all the luck in the world based on the monsoon that afternoon. I shot this wedding as an associate for Rachael Ruffin Photography.

Westley | Class of 2014

August 10, 2013 · 12:15 am · - high school seniors

Westley is a 2014 Kansas City Senior. He attends Park Hill South High School and will be graduating next spring. Westley is a runner and puts all his energy to good use running on the track team. If you didn’t think this guy was busy enough he also plays violin for all-district orchestra.

I just love, love, LOVE this image of Westley! I knew as soon as I snapped the picture that it would be a favorite.

It’s time for another life story. What’s a life story? Well it’s a personal project that I and a group of wonderful photographers are doing. It’s a great way for us to capture our own lives every month. At the end of post we are each linking to another photographer. It’s a circle of stories in pictures. If you are new or want to see my past life stories here they are.

Kansas City summers are hot! We beat the heat by spending a lot of time in our pool over the summer. Fortunately now that I have an underwater camera I can use it to my hearts desire. Before with the big camera I’d get it out poolside for a few pictures and then quickly put it back before anything could happen to my monster camera. That would also mean I’d lose documenting a lot of those fun times we have. Now I can document that time without any worries.

Isaiah | Class of 2014 | Senior Portraits Kansas City

July 5, 2013 · 1:07 pm · - high school seniors

Isaiah is graduating next spring! I had a fun time hanging out with him. We found some great areas in Olathe to capture his high school senior pictures. I had a chance to capture some senior portraits for his older brother Jonathan a few years ago. I love when I have the chance to watch families grow up. We had a blast creating his senior pictures. He’s the youngest of four boys – yes that’s right four boys! That’s proof enough that his mom is a saint! I couldn’t imagine being the only girl in a household of that many males.

I seriously love when I find new shooting locations to use for sessions! There’s nothing like new territory to get the creative juices flowing.

We go to the library at least once and usually twice a week. I love that my kiddos already love reading and the library. I would often get grounded from the library as a child.

The first thing we have to do is return all of our old books. We love that there’s a machine that does it all automatically now at our library!

Gabby had a field trip day a few weeks ago. This time we went to Deanna Rose Farmstead. It’s a great hands on farm that has tons of fun things to do. If you haven’t been there, live in Overland Park and have kids well then you’re missing out. The best part is it’s free most days to go. Gabby has been there countless times since it’s right around the block from the grandparents house. However, she’d never been there before with her friends from pre-school.

Ofcourse every great field trip involves a bus ride!

New Product: Wall Display Examples | KC Photographers

    May 10, 2013 · 4:29 pm · products

What happens after you just had a session with one of the BEST KC photographers ;) and you get your digital images? I can tell you what I have done in the past, I get busy. I forget to get them printed and hung up. Then when I do think about how I should do it I get paralyzed by the fear of picking something too big, too small or the wrong image! The last thing I want my clients to do is not enjoy them! They need to be printed and enjoyed. The best way to do that is to hang them up big. One reason the process can be so daunting is you don’t want to shell out lots of money and then realize it’s the wrong size. Usually people don’t realize how small an 8×10 looks on the wall.

So I’m very happy to announce that I’m now offering wall display examples to my past and future clients. Want to know how big you can go on that wall? Or which arrangement of your children’s pictures will look best? Well now you’ll know before you order them and the best part is it’s pictures of YOUR home so you can see if a 16×20 is too small above your fireplace or if you want a larger display above your couch. These examples are actual walls in one of my clients homes and her pictures from her session.

Baby Colin is now six months old! It’s hard to believe how fast they grow up but they do. I just love the chubby wrinkles and pure curiosity. I can’t seem to get enough of the bubbly baby laughter. Big sister McKenna is an awesome big sister. She just just adores her baby brother and no one else can make him laugh like she can.

Life Stories: Recharging Mom | Kansas City Family Photographer

    April 26, 2013 · 9:10 am · life-stories, personal

It’s time for another life story. What’s a life story? Well it’s a personal project that I and a group of wonderful photographers are doing. It’s a great way for us to capture our own lives every month. At the end of post we are each linking to another photographer. It’s a whole big circle of stories in pictures. If you are new or want to see my past life stories here they are.

I think it can be easy to lose your identity of who you are as a person once you become a mom. I’m intent on making sure who I am doesn’t get lost in the day to day of wiping noses, pouring glasses of milk and demands for more cut apples. It’s one reason you’ll always see my facebook profile has me in it (ok maybe joined with a smaller cutie) but I’m always in the shot because it’s my profile, not theirs. Please don’t mistake me – I love, love, LOVE, my children but they aren’t my whole world. Gasp did I just say that? Yep I did and I’m ok with it. I know in order to be an excellent mom I have to take time away from them to recharge.

That’s what this month’s post focuses on. This last weekend I took a trip with some girlfriends to Vail. No we didn’t ski. Instead, we shopped, we ate really good food, we got pedicures, and then we shopped some more. Basically we did whatever we wanted because we didn’t have a small child demanding all of our attention.

For Christmas both kids got books with a reader that reads to them. As a child I loved to read and I want them to love it as much as I do. I was the kid that would get grounded from going to the library – I loved reading that much. A common saying for the Frantz household is “books are our friends”. Since they aren’t reading solo yet, these leapster toys really encourage them to turn the pages, and discover the stories for themselves. I was fortunate to find the books when Target was having a heck of a deal and the only drawback is we have more than the devices will hold!

I love how engaged they get. They will pour over the books until I’m tired of hearing the songs and stories. Did I mention they have songs too? Oh yes wonderful catchy tunes that invariably will be played over and over. I’ve had one stuck in my head for awhile. Unfortunately that one was taken off the device when we switched books :D Little guy LOVES that one a little too much.

Kansas Photographer | 10 Mile Project | Red Barn

    February 10, 2013 · 1:00 pm · personal

I started a new personal project with a group of other photographers. Drive 10 miles from your home (or work) and find something to photograph. Don’t go 11 and don’t stop at 9 because you see something cool. This is a project to work with what you have. As a photographer this concept is so scary. Usually I will scout out locations long before an actual session and find something that I love. I almost bailed on this while driving because I kept seeing things I really didn’t want to photograph. Fortunately I think I really lucked out with this one. Somehow I ended up at this red barn right after my my odometer read 9 at the end. I was able to get permission from the owners to photograph sessions whenever I wanted! Who would like to do the first session here? The red barn would work great for a senior or family session once everything is green again.

This is a blog circle of other photographers doing the exact same thing. So after you check out mine be sure to click through and see the others.

We’d never been to Wonderscope Children’s Museum but wanted to give it a try. The weather has been so cold that it really limits our play options. This is a family friendly museum where everything is hand’s on. The museum was originally a school and was renovated into being a children’s museum after it was closed down. Each room has a different theme, water, air, movement, building, pet and baby care, etc. The great thing is everything is supposed to be touched by little hands! We didn’t even have a chance to see all the rooms before we had to leave, I’m sure we’ll be back soon.

My children love any art projects but probably all preschoolers do. I could call something a ‘project’ and it’s instantly entertaining for them. We spend a lot of time in front of this table but in the winter this is our second home. Foam stickers are always lots of fun. Fortunately I had picked some up on a day after Christmas sale.

Life Stories: The Ornaments ~ Kansas City Family Photographer

    November 30, 2012 · 9:00 am · life-stories

It’s time for another life story. What’s a life story? Well it’s a personal project that I and a group of wonderful photographers are doing. It’s a great way for us to capture our own lives every month. At the end of post we are each linking to another photographer. It’s a whole big circle of stories in pictures. If you are new or want to see my past life stories here they are.

I love family traditions. I feel that having traditions make memories ‘stickier’ and easier for children to remember. All of our ornaments have a story. Every year each kiddo (and the hubs) get a new one in their stocking. Usually the ornament is related to something that’s important to them that year. Whenever we take a vacation we will usually get an ornament as well. This is the first year my kiddos understand that each one belongs to someone and has a story behind it. I pulled each ornament one by one and they’d want to hear the story behind that particular ornament.

When they grow up I want them each to take their own ornaments to their home to start off their own trees. The first year I had my own tree in my tiny little apartment (with my sister as my room mate) we had ZERO ornaments. So we ended up taking the few stuffed animals we still had and putting them all over the tree. I don’t want that for my children.

This is the one momma gave daddy the year he worked with ESPN a lot.

I’m doing the same thing for my kids with ornaments. We buy them one every year and try to get it to represent something about them for that year! It’s been a fun tradition! Loved seeing all of these! And laughed at all the snowmen hanging out together. :)

My mom gets the kids an ornament each year as well. Mine aren't at the age where they understand it yet, but I'm sure they will. Such fun memories!

My mom buys my kids an ornament every year. I plan to carry on the grandma/grandchild tradition w/ the granddoll!

The Ly Family | Photographer in Kansas City

I love when I have a chance to watch families grow up, it’s one of the best parts of my job. I met up with this family a few weeks ago and we all had fun. We were a bit concerned the weather wasn’t going to play nice but this day turned out to be perfect Overland Park afternoon.

This little girl Madison has so much personality. To say she is spirited would be an understatement.

Don’t you love her coat? If it had been any larger I might have tried to steal it for myself! So cute. Rarely when I snap a picture do I know that it’ll be my favorite, well I instantly knew this one was it.

Life Stories: Pumpkin Decorating ~ Kansas City Family Photographer

    October 26, 2012 · 9:00 am · life-stories

It’s time for another life story. What’s a life story? Well it’s a personal project that I and a group of wonderful photographers are doing. It’s a great way for us to capture our own lives every month. At the end of post we are each linking to another photographer. It’s a whole big circle of stories in pictures. If you are new or want to see my past life stories here they are.

We did something a little different this year for our pumpkins. In the past the children will pick out a pattern and then watch as sharp objects are used to carve them. Since the eldest is only 3 this results in a lot of “I can do it myself”. This is of course followed by the obligatory “No you will poke your eye out let momma poke her eye out instead”. It’s guaranteed that the cheap pumpkin carving kit tools will break five minutes into the process. We will then be left using a carving knife from the butcher block. Usually it takes so long that the kids have to go to bed and daddy is left to slave over some intricate Elmo carving. Where is the family love in that? No offense Elmo, we love you – especially in this house. However, I love my sanity more.

This year I decided our pumpkins were going to be something the children could do from start to finish themselves. My only goal was for us to enjoy the activity as a family. A side bonus was I able to document the entire process since I wasn’t actually doing the work ;)

I always try to talk my kid into alternate ideas since carving is so messy. They never go for it. lol. Love the bedazzled pumpkin! Too cute.

Wedding: Ashley & Kyle | Kansas City Photography

    October 23, 2012 · 11:13 am · - weddings

Ashley and Kyle were such a fun bride and groom. I had so much fun the whole day! I am so privileged to work with amazing Kansas City photographers throughout the area. This was my first chance capturing a wedding with Melissa of Melissa Lin Ellis Photography.

We managed to have a wonderful time even though it was so hot out. As a photographer you get the unique chance of seeing the entire day behind the scenes for a couple on their special day. Ashley and Kyle were willing to try pretty much anything. Their ceremony was at the gorgeous Redeemer Fellowship in Kansas City Mo. The Foundation in the West Bottoms made for a unique reception setting.

Here is the story of their wedding day:
